From Football to Euchre

The World Euchre Federation has confirmed that Northwestern University's dynamic Euchre duo, kicker Jack Olsen and long snapper Will Halkyard, will be competing in this year's World Euchre Championship tournament in New Glarus, Wisconsin. Their participation will excite Euchre enthusiasts eager to witness the synergy and skill displayed by these gridiron athletes in a different arena.

Olsen and Halkyard aren't newcomers to the Euchre scene; in fact, they set the Euchre world ablaze in 2023 when they were spotted performing the "in the barn" celebration after making a field goal in the middle of Ryan Field, the home field of the Northwestern Wildcats. Around the Midwest, often when a Euchre team makes nine out of the ten points necessary to win a game, the players enter what's known as being "in the barn." One player intertwines their hands and flips them upside down, symbolizing a cow’s udder. The other player will then reach across the table and grab the other's thumbs. Some will even moo like a cow. The colorful display serves as a spirited declaration that victory is within grasp, infusing the game with a delightful blend of camaraderie and competitive flair. After their successful field goal against Maryland late last season, the duo celebrated by performing an impromptu “in the barn” celebration. Only the loyal Euchre fans would have had an inkling of what the on-field celebration meant.

Their presence at the World Euchre Championship promises to inject a fresh energy into the competition, as they bring their competitive spirit and unwavering love for the game Euchre. Beyond their impeccable skills as athletes, Olsen and Halkyard epitomize the essence of sportsmanship and friendship, embodying the values that make Euchre more than just a game—it's a celebration of community and connection. As they prepare to showcase their talents on a global stage, one thing is certain: Olsen and Halkyard's journey from the football field to the Euchre table is sure to leave an indelible mark on the World Euchre Championship and inspire players for years to come.
